Franc Golob

(1941)

Franc Golob, an academic painter, was born in Celje in 1941. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana under professors Marij Pregelj and Maksim Sedej, graduating in 1970 with a thesis titled “The Shop Window as an Artistic Space.” Between 1970 and 1980, he created numerous multimedia projects and trade fair displays for Brest Cerknica and Meblo Nova Gorica, presenting them in cities such as Belgrade, Ljubljana, Nova Gorica, London, Zagreb, and Tripoli. From 1980 to 1991, he worked as an external collaborator for Postojna Cave in the fields of graphic design and photography. Until his retirement, he taught drawing and painting at the Pedagogical High School in Tolmin and the Art High School in Nova Gorica. His artistic output is divided into distinct cycles, with notable works including “Tolmin Watercolors,” the graphic series “Multiples,” the photo monographs “Nova Gorica 1976” and “Postojna Cave,” the digital graphic cycle “Simulacris,” and the acrylic painting cycle “Calling of Spring.” He marked his 70th birthday with two major retrospective exhibitions: one at the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Celje (2000–2010) and another at the Riko Debenjak Gallery in Kanal (1956–2000).

“A painting must have some of the atmosphere it had during its creation.”

Work

For Franc Golob, the richness of his creative journey lies in engaging with the tangible reality, which continues to serve as both a response and a challenge, a source of inspiration and fascination. His travels are not merely about exploring the unknown, experiencing, and enjoying the diversity of the world but also about visually documenting and recording it in a travel sketchbook. This process results in drawings and watercolors that capture images of the world, the uniqueness of specific environments, natural landmarks, architectural highlights, fragments of history, and glimpses of contemporary life. Even human figures find their place in this visual chronicle. Looking through his travel sketchbooks reveals works created on-site, showcasing Golob’s ability to immerse himself directly and authentically into new surroundings, responding to their visual forms and specific appearances. This leads to swift artistic reactions, beginning with the selection of striking, expressively potent motifs and culminating in the synthesis of external reality into linear traces and contours.
