Boris Zuljan
(1944 – 2013)
Painter and printmaker Boris Zuljan was born on 20 May 1944, in Ricmanje near Trieste. He attended Slovenian secondary school in Trieste and studied at the Istituto E. Nordio art school. He earned his habilitation in fine arts in Padua. From 1962 onwards, he taught at Slovenian schools in Dolina, St. Ivan, Katinara, and St. Jakob in Trieste. He was also involved in restoration work.
“I wondered how you can experience art if you immerse yourself in colors, if you travel across a painting with a camera without considering the logic of what is up and what is down…”
Work
He worked in watercolor, gouache, oil, tempera, as well as in graphics and drawing, focusing primarily on the landscapes of the Karst and Istria, which he poetically depicted in a vibrant palette. His style followed figurative landscape traditions in his own unique way, using optically harmonious, vivid colors and boldly broad palette knife strokes to achieve soft, shimmering light effects. Notable works include: Wind from the Northeast (1957), Snowfall (1972), Scene from Trnovica (1973, award-winning), House with a Kalona (1975), House with a Baladur in Ricmanje (1975), Mulberry Tree (1978), Tree-Object (1978), Byzantine Gate (1985), Gray Tones (1985), Fragments of Sunken Architectures (1988), Mysterious Forces (1988). In recent years, his paintings became more personal, with figurative elements of the human body emerging within abstract compositions.
Since 1962, he participated in over 60 group exhibitions and held more than 20 solo exhibitions. In 1990, he contributed to the restoration of the parish church in Mačkolje. He restored two ancient wall paintings from former side altars, painted wooden wall paneling, benches, and the ceiling above the presbytery, and reinstated the original inscription above the arch: “MY HOUSE IS A HOUSE OF PRAYER.”
