Boris Zuljan
(1944 – 2013)
Painter and printmaker Boris Zuljan was born on 20 May 1944, in Ricmanje near Trieste. He attended Slovenian secondary school in Trieste and studied at the Istituto E. Nordio art school. Zuljan taught in Slovenian schools in Trieste and worked in restoration.
“I wondered how you can experience art if you immerse yourself in colors, if you travel across a painting with a camera without considering the logic of what is up and what is down…”
Work
Zuljan created watercolors, gouache, oil paintings, tempera works, and graphics, mainly landscapes of the Karst and Istria. His style was characterized by vibrant colours and bold strokes, creating a soft light effect. Notable works include Wind from the Northeast (1957) and The Mulberry Tree (1978). Later, he began incorporating human figures into abstract forms.
Since 1962, Zuljan exhibited widely and participated in over 60 group shows and more than 20 solo exhibitions. In 1990, he participated in the restoration of the parish church in Mačkolje.
